Proposed traffic calming scheme for Clarinbridge has stalled

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A proposed traffic calming scheme for Clarinbridge has stalled amid concerns over conditions attached to the long-awaited project.

The matter was discussed at a special private meeting between council officials and Athenry-Oranmore district councillors this afternoon.

Previously, concerns were raised when an earlier draft of the scheme involved the removal of a filter lane allowing traffic to turn right to Stradbally North.

However, this afternoon’s meeting heard that due to new regulations introduced in 2013, traffic calming schemes are no longer permitted to feature such lanes.

The scheme has now been put on hold as councillors and county officials explore whether or not an agreement can be reached that includes the retention of the filter lane.

Councillor Martina Kinane says the lane was hard-sought for Clarinbridge and is essential from a safety point of view.
